Commentary by G L Jones
Proverbs 14:1-7 KJV
1- Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
2- He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the Lord: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.
3- In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them.
4- Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.
5- A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.
6- A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.
7- Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.
Overview: Proverbs 1-7:
In Proverbs, chapter 14:1, Solomon shows the importance of the woman in the home to either build it or pluck it down. He makes a contrast between the wise woman (See Proverbs 31:10-31) and a foolish woman (Proverbs 9:13).
In verse 2, Solomon tells us that if we walk UPRIGHTLY then we FEAR THE LORD, otherwise I’d we do not, then we prove that we DISPISE the LORD!
In verse 3, Solomon contrasts the ROD of PRIDE that is in the MOUTH of the FOOLISH against the LIPS of the WISE which will PRESERVE them!
The contrast is this : While a FOOL is beating others down with his mouth, the WISE man knows how to SHUT UP – when there is CONFLICT and thus be PRESERVED. The book of Proverbs speaks of 4 rods on the mouth of a FOOLS and the Wicked:
- The Rod of ANGER (Sown by the Workers of Iniquity who will Reap Vanity – Proverbs 22:8)
- The Rod of PRIDE (Proverbs 14:3)
- A Rod for the Backs of FOOLS (Proverbs 26:3)
- A Rod for the Backs of those VOID of UNDERSTANDING (Proverbs 10:13)
In verse 4, Solomon tells us that where the Oxen (Workers) are that there is INCREASE!
In verse 5, Solomon contrasts a FAITHFUL WITNESS vs a FALSE WTNESS who LIES, inferring that if we want the TRUTH, we need to always know who we are dealing with!
In verse 6, Solomon compares the SCORNER who seeketh WISDOM (which can only be found in HUMILTY or the LOW PLACE) to a MAN of UNDERSTANDING to whom KNOWLEDGE will come easy!
Lastly, in verse 7, Solomon give some of the best advice that can be found anywhere:
“Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.”
