Commentary by GL Jones

Proverbs 12:22-28

22- Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.

23- A prudent man concealeth knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness.

24- The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute.

25- Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.

26- The righteous is more excellent than his neighbour: but the way of the wicked seduceth them.

27- The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.

28- In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.

Commentary by GL Jones

Proverbs 12:1-7

2- A good man obtaineth favour of the Lord: but a man of wicked devices will he condemn.

3- A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

5- The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

6- The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

7- The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.

Overview: Proverbs 12:1-7

In Proverbs, chapter 12, verse 1, Solomon tells us that the people who love Instruction love KNOWLEDGE but those people who hate REPROOF are STUPID!

Brutish = Stupid

In verse 2, Solomon tells us that a good man obtains God’s FAVOR but a man of wicked devices God will CONDEMN.When a person is condemned he/she sits on death row until the execution of God’s Judgement is carried out!(See Proverbs 29:1)

In verse 3, Solomon tells us that a person can never be ESTABLISHED by WICKEDNESS: But the ROOT of RIGHTEOUSNESS is IMMOVABLE!

In verse 4, Solomon tells us that a VIRTUOUS woman is a CROWN to her husband but a woman that EMBARRASSES her husband is a CANCER!

In verse 5, Solomon tells us that the THOUGHTS of the RIGHTEOUS are RIGHT but the ADVICE from the WICKED are filled with DECEIT.

In verse 6, Solomon tells us that the motive of the WICKED is to ENTRAP with WORDS or to lie in wait for the RIGHTEOUS, but the UPRIGHT because they are endowed with WISDOM, are WELL ADVISED and thus they will be DELIVERED by the words of their mouth (their RESPONSE or NON RESPONSE to the WICKED).(See Proverbs 11:9)

And lastly in verse 25, Solomon tells us that the WICKED are OVERTHROWN and CEASES to EXIST while the RIGHTEOUS shall STAND!

A Contrast Between Righteousness & Wickedness (Proverbs 13 – Part IV)

Commentary By GL Jones

Proverbs13: 20-25

20- He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

21- Evil  pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

22- A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

23- Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.

24- He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

25- The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.

Overview: Proverbs 13: 20-25

In Proverbs, chapter 13, verse 20, Solomon tells us that the people who hang out with WISE people will also be WISE but the companions of FOOLS will be destroyed. Our ASSOCIATIONS tell on us!

In verse 21, Solomon speaks to the LAW of SOWING & REAPING. If we sow EVIL we will reap EVIL but if we SOW RIGHTEOUSNESS we will be repaid in RIGHTEOUSNESS!

In verse 22, Solomon tells us that a good man leaveth an INHERITANCE to his grandchildren but the riches of the SINNER are laid up for the JUST!

In verse 23, Solomon tells us that the POOR puts forth the effort in the harvest but lacks the judgement to do it more efficiently so that many crops are wasted.

In verse 24, Solomon beleives in corporal punishment or spanking for children. Since it is recorded that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines : we can only speculate as to the number of children that he had.

And lastly in verse 25, Solomon tells us that the RIGHTEOUS shall eat to the SATISFYING of his SOUL (MIND), but the BELLY of the WICKED shall ROT.What stands out to me is that the Righteous is seeking things in the spiritual or soulical realm while the Wicked is always seeking materialistic things to satisfy the FLESH!

18- Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

Overview: Proverbs 13: 13-19

In Proverbs, chapter 13, verse 13, Solomon tells us that those who DESPISE the Word shall be DESTROYED but those who FEARETH the Commandment shall be REWARDED!

Fear = Reverential Trust

In verse 14, Solomon speaks of the LAW of the WISE which is to DEPART FROM EVIL and the SNARES of DEATH! He likens this LAW of the WISE to a Fountain of LIFE.

In verse 15,Solomon tells us that if we get UNDERSTANDING we also obtain FAVOR from both God & man. (See Proverbs 3:4)

And lastly in verse 19, Solomon tells us that when a desired goal is accomplished, it is sweet to the mind (also called CLOSURE). He also states that it is virtually impossible for a FOOL to DEPART from EVIL!

A Contrast Between Righteousness & Wickedness (Proverbs 13 – Part II)

By GL Jones

Proverbs 13:7-12

7- There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

8- The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

9- The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

10- Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

11- Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

12- Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Overview: Proverbs 13: 1-6

In Proverbs, chapter 13, verse 7, Solomon describes the DECEIT of RICHES:

– One man hoards material things yet has nothing;
– While another man makes himself poor though (HUMILITY) and has great riches (WISDOM). Because WISDOM is the principal thing : the second man comes out ahead! Spiritual riches always TRUMP natural riches which are fleeting and temporal!

In verse 8, Solomon speaks of the ransom of a mans LIFE.

Using my Strong’s concordance I see that this Hebrew word for ransom: (3724) (kopher) means a village, a redemptive price,a sum of money or a bribe.

There are at least 3 things that I was taught that MONEY can’t BUY YOU: LOVE, LIFE & HAPPINESS! I say this while thinking of two billionaires who died during my lifetime, of brain cancer.Their money could not SAVE them!

Solomon goes on to say that a poor man will not hear REBUKE. DISOBEDIENCE always leads us to POVERTY!

In verse 9, Solomon tells us that the RIGHTEOUS delighteth in his LIGHT while the WICKED’S LAMP is put out! This is why the WICKED stumbles in the dark.

In verse 10, Solomon tells us that When we see PRIDE, then CONTENTION will always follow, but with the WELL Advised, there is WISDOM! Remember that often, this WISDOM will REST in the heart of the PRUDENT!

In verse 11, Solomon tells us that: any wealth obtained dishonestly won’t last, but riches obtained through working hard shall INCREASE!

And lastly in verse 12, Solomon tells us that HOPE deferred make the heart sick! In abusive relationships and situations, the abuser knows that HOPE is the last thing to go before a VICTIM completely and finally gives up! But DESIRE is a TREE of LIFE! This includes the DESIRE to LIVE!

This is why we MUST keep HOPE alive!
